Benefits of Breakfast
Description
Oftentimes university students forget about breakfast, they can barely make it to class on time, let alone have the energy to make themselves a quick and nutritious breakfast.
In a study done at University of Waterloo, data was collected from 30 000+ students from Ontario and Alberta in 2014/15. The participants self reported breakfast eating and school breakfast program use. They found that 16% of students reported using the provided school breakfast programs (Godin et al., 2018). In another study done at a large high-school, the results showed that a breakfast program with extended cafeteria hours and a mobile cart with a breakfast increased the breakfast participation rate by more than 400%. (Oslta, 2013).
Aside from that, the benefits of having a nutritious meal in the morning can decrease the chances of cardiovascular disease, type 3 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, strokes, metabolic syndrome and more (CITE).
There's also cognitive benefits of breakfast
Increased energy: The brain needs glucose to get going and studies show that skipping breakfast lowers cognitive function and work efficiency. Therefore, breakfast is considered one of the most important meals of the day for nutritional intake and performance.
Improved concentration: Eating breakfast can improve cognitive function such as memory, concentration, and problem solving. A balanced breakfast with protein and whole grains supports brain function by providing glucose.
